Meeting of the Board of Directors’ held January 12, 2017 – The FONOM Board of Directors’ met in the City of North Bay. A number of issues were discussed including fire department infrastructure, municipal election requirements, energy costs, broadband, and upcoming events. The Board supported a motion to extend the length of term on the FONOM Board of Directors’ to align with the length of term of Council which will be decided upon at the Annual General Meeting in North Bay on May 12, 2017.
2017-2018 Memberships – Nearly 70% of membership fees have been paid for the upcoming fiscal year. Reminder that fees are to be paid by March 31, 2017 to ensure your municipality remains in good standing. Without the support of our members, we would not be able to continue to advocate on behalf of Northern Ontario.
2017 FONOM/MMA Northeastern Municipal Conference – We are excited to announce that Steve Paikin, the host of TVO’s The Agenda will be this year’s keynote address. Don’t forget to register for the upcoming FONOM/MMA Northeastern Municipal Conference taking place at Nipissing University, May 10, 11 and 12 in the City of North Bay. 2017 ROMA Conference– FONOM attended the ROMA Conference January 29-31 in Toronto and met with members of the Provincial Cabinet, PC Caucus, NDP Caucus and the Ontario Medical Association. A number of issues were raised including future transportation plans for Ontario Northland, energy costs, railway rights-of-way property taxation, bear management, the non-urgent patient transfer system, the delivery of emergency services, and interest arbitration.
CFSA-ESA Stakeholder Meeting – FONOM participated in the meeting led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and presented with the Northwestern Municipal Association (NOMA) on the impacts of integrating the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the Crown Forest Sustainability Act (CFSA) on the forest industry and the communities that depend on it. The meeting was also attended by indigenous representatives, the forest sector, environmental non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders.
