Party Leaders Debate in the North

Date published:
Wednesday, May 28, 2014

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) was part of the Northern Leaders’ Debate on Monday, May 26th in partnership with the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) the Northwestern Ontario Associated Chambers of Commerce (NOACC), the Northeastern Ontario Chambers of Commerce and Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN).

The afternoon debate was held in Thunder Bay at the Valhalla Inn and included the Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, Kathleen Wynne, and the Leader of the New Democratic Party, Andrea Horwath. The one hour debate featured questions from all five organizers directed at party leaders.

Questions that were focused on energy pricing and distribution, the future of the Ring of Fire, OPP billing model, consultation with northern municipalities, and resource based industries such as mining and forestry represented a dominant part of the debate.

“This was a great opportunity to hear the Leaders’ positions and their party’s platform on issues specific to northern Ontario,” says Al Spacek, FONOM President. “It is important that the leaders recognize that things are done differently in northern Ontario. The admission today that imposing policy and legislation on us without consultation doesn’t work, is significant,” continued Spacek.

All three party leaders’ will debate on June 3rd before voters head to the polls on June 12th and determine the next Premier of Ontario.
