FONOM Pleased with Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund Announcement

Date published:
Tuesday, August 26, 2014

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) applauds the recent Provincial announcement of a permanent Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF). This $100 million annual fund will assist municipalities that have a population of 100,000 or less, have more than 25 per cent rural residents or are located in northern Ontario.

FONOM’s President, Al Spacek, and Past President, Mac Bain, were pleased to be part of an Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) working group that made recommendations to the Province regarding the formula for funding disbursement.

“The formula based portion of the fund will provide flexible, predictable funding on an annual basis and municipalities will be able to apply the funding to long-term budget planning,” says Al Spacek, Mayor of Kapuskasing and President of FONOM.  “There is also a component that will allow smaller communities to apply for special funding to undertake large capital projects that is separate from their annual allocation,” continued Spacek.

FONOM is pleased that the government has recognized the need for investments into critical infrastructure. Additionally, the permanent funding program will help to provide financial stability for municipalities as they plan their infrastructure projects.
